Joe Russo and Marco Benevento kicked off the Green Apple Music Festival with two acoustic sets Thursday night at their "home court" - the Knitting Factory. I went to the first of the two and, at the end, left being more impressed with the Duo than I have ever been.
Intimate and engaging, the Duo dusted off their material for the first time in a few months with a spectacular set of improv-laced jazz rock fusion. As Joe mentioned in my interview they have re-worked some of their songs and used the two sets to test out new versions of classics such as "Soba", "Powder", "Becky" and "Play Pause Stop". Flat out, these two players have mad skills and it is hard for one to not be in awe of their musicianship.
The Duo will be playing sporadically in various incarnations over the next few months as they work on new material.
