Ziggy Marley was very impressive this past week at the Bowery. I can only imagine how tough it must be to follow in the footsteps of a legendary musician and father such as Bob. Ziggy showed he doesn't hide from his family's roots- he embraces them. His music is true to his style: positive and passionate roots reggae.
I was pleased to see Ziggy doesn't employ the standard issue live reggae phrases such as "Whoi-yoi" and always needing to ask how irie the crowd is. The setlist did not include his greatest hits "Tomorrow People" and "Conscious Party"; most of his new album, "Love Is My Religion" (sold exclusively via Tarjay), was played instead. The setlist:
Into the Groove
Make Some Music
Looking
Forever Loving Jah
A Lifetime
Shalom Salaam
Justice
Still The Storms
Be Free
Beach In Hawaii
Black Cat
Let Jah Will Be Done
Love Is My Religion
---------------
Melancholy
Looking
Africa Unite
The highlights for me were "Shalom Salaam", "Love Is My Religion", and "Forever Loving Jah".
Catch Ziggy on Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC) on Monday, August 14th.
