WHAT TO WATCH

f
We asked music-industry insiders whom they're eager to see at South by Southwest. Here are some of the acts on their radars.

Band: The Most Serene Republic
Comment: This Canadian indie-rock septet has "a fun sound that goes with life. I could see it working well in campaigns," Mr. Barkan says.

I just noticed one of my favorite bands from this past CMJ, The Most Serene Republic, is playing two shows this week in the city.  Frontman / Trombonist Adrian Jewett and company played an extremely fun set at Brooklyn Vegan's Bowery CMJ Showcase in October.  CMJ fell right after the release of their most recent LP, Population, an album full of jazzy / proggy / poppy goodness.  Try listening to the opening track "Humble Peasants" and not digging this band.  Do it [/Stiller from Starsky & Hutch]:

TMSR play this Thursday at Southpaw (with another FB fav, The Diggs) and Friday at Mercury Lounge  (tix still available to both).

A new camera and the wrong type of converter (plus an upcoming wedding...mine) severely hampered my posting of CMJ pics and reviews this week.  Sucks getting this up so late but I guess better late than never.

I kicked off CMJ Tuesday night at the Bowery Ballroom at Brooklyn Vegan's Official CMJ Showcase.  Leading up to the night I was most excited to see Miracle Fortress for the first time.  Then this happened.  But the show must - and did - go on.

Canadian band The Most Serene Republic were  for me the highlight of the night; their sound brought a smile to my face and some pep in my step.  Bon Iver was mesmerizing.  Shaky Hands was...well...shaky.   Rosebuds did their dancey rock vibe thing; that was kind cool.  Dean & Britta....Britta....Britta....see pic above....Britta.  Rounding out the night was Voxtrot.  First time catching them; really enjoyed the set.

Stereogum has a good review some pics.
