Midnight Movies - Mercury Lounge 02.07.2007

If you like Velvet Underground and Nico-typed bands, then you'll love Midnight Movies.  Playing to a sold out Mercury Tuesday night it would appear they could call their trip to NYC successful.  Highlight - busting out the Moody Blues classic "Nights In White Satin" to finish their set.  Lead singer Gena Olivier and white satin.......................yeah *sighs*.

Lily Allen landed stateside last week, performing on SNL and unleashing her version of British charm on America via MTV Discover and Download Tour.  Lily was so bloggy last year she made 2005 CYHSY! buzz look like Fall Out Boy love on hipster blogs.

I have been avoiding the Lily bandwagon hardcore since last summer's blog buzz.  I don't know, it just wasn't dynamic enough for me.  I dug the reggae vibes thrown into her songs but just could not be won over by her rhymes.  I figured I would try again with open arms when her album was released in the US at the end of January.  I was pleasantly surprised with this show...definitely endeared me to her.  She totally got bonus points for rocking some sweet Jordan III Retro's.  Her bouncy, laid back vibe on stage was infectious.  "LDN" was the perfect opener.  Seeming quite comfortable on stage, Lily and her band led a house party at Webster Hall.

I won't claim this to be the best show I've seen but I won't purposely avoid listening to her music anymore.  It will be hard to imagine her not having a spectacular 2007 in America.

Setlist over at Product Shop NYC

Trey Anastasio 92Y Interview - Full mp3

Tragic Trey Anastasio participated in an interview/mini performance last night at the 92nd St Y.  Relix contributor Anthony DeCurtis was the I missed it to go to a show at the Mercury but one of my coworkers went and said it was very moving and inspirational.  Trey spoke candidly about his recent legal battles, Phish, Phil Lesh, and more.  Listen to the entire interview below:

Took the almost-missus to see her fellow Canadians, pop rockers Sloan, at the Bowery a couple weeks ago.  This was one of her awesome Hanukkah presents.  I really don't know much of their catalogue - as don't most Americans - but still had a great time.  Couldn't tell you the name of even one song they played though....
