Tomorrow I'll be heading out early to see The Wood Brothers at the Living Room at 8pm for a free show. My roommate introduced them to me last fall; i must admit they are a band that really remind me of my home state, Virginia. I can close my eyes, imagine seeing two Blacksburg locals playing Baylee's on an off night, and having this wonderfully soulful sound coming from the stage.
If you are familiar with modern jazz outfit Medeski, Martin, and Wood, this band is Chris Wood of MMW and his brother Oliver. Oliver and Chris are playing in a completely different part of the music-genre world than MMW.
A description of their music from their home page:
The Wood Brothers have begun a collaboration that combines their shared childhood influences with everything they've learned since leaving home. Their music has a rootsy feel that blends blues, folk, and rock music in a guitar/bass duo.
The brothers’ debut album, "Ways Not To Lose" produced by John Medeski, will be released on Blue Note Records, March 7, 2006.
I saw them at Satalla back in October...a very intimate show with only 50 or so in attendance. My pictures of that show are posted over at The Outer Edges.
Check out these two demos from the upcoming release, "Way Not To Lose":
